Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

SOUNDS good, but what is it, and how is it presented to children?

Sel contradicts values taught in most Kings Homes

SEL encourages children to question their identity, and to hide discussions they have with school personnel from their parents.  Many SEL concepts contradict beliefs taught by Christian, Jewish, Muslin, Hindi, Jehovah's Witness and Mormon parents.  Here is an excellent summary of SEL that a parent-group put together after researching many of the resources we've linked below, plus other resources from their children's classrooms.

Is This Happening in Kings?

  • Lesson plans for SEL are not in a text book or novel, so they are never seen or approved by the school board.
  • The only way to know what is taught in your child's classroom is to ask the teacher for lesson plans, websites, videos, handouts, posters, classroom decorations, quizzes, questionnaires, tests and all other teaching material used in your child's class.
  • Kings official, and repeated, response to every curriculum question is they teach to the state standards.

  • One Virginia school district removed a pornographic book from its school library, while another Virginia school district said that book is not pornographic.

  • See screen shots below of notifications and research that has been done regarding this assessment.
  • Some parents have contacted their school's principal to opt their children out of the assessment, because the parents are not allowed to see the results of the assessment, but it is available to the teacher, principal and counselor.
  • No one has seen the questions on the assessment, but several parents have asked to see it.  Their requests have not been responded to.
  • No one has seen the curriculum for the Character Effect pilot program yet.

1. Ask your child's teacher to see the tools, curriculum and all materials that will be used.

  • If everything looks acceptable to you, sleep well knowing you've done your homework!
  • If you have concerns about the curriculum or any of the materials, discuss those concerns with the teacher.
  • If you need help resolving those concerns, ask for a meeting with the teacher and the principal.

2. ask why you cannot see your teacher's assemment of your child

  • If the answer is not acceptable to you, ask the teacher how to formally opt out of the program, and discuss what your child will do during the time others are engaged in these activities.
  • Notify your principal, in writing, your child will opt out of this program, and include your understanding of what your child will be doing during these activities.

3. Email the School Board Members. They work for YOU. Tell them what you want them to do.

  • The current school board rarely, if ever, responds to emails from the community.  
  • It is most efficient to copy Greg Sears.  He normally responds in a timely manner.
