Social Justice and the Modern World is a course designed with an initial preliminary self-assessment and reflection unit wherein students will examine their own relationship to justice, bias, and identity. From there, the class will select five units that connect with various aspects of social justice. Currently, these units are global poverty, domestic poverty, race, sexism, sexuality/gender expression, ableism and disabilities, environmental justice, justice and the legal system, and religion. These units will incorporate fictional and non-fictional reading material, documentaries, and other resources that promote critical inquiry around the respective topics. The course will end with a capstone civic project that will incorporate material from the class, community service, and student initiative in order to address one of the areas covered in class.

This elective course will utilize films to analyze and discuss the impact of race on society in the United States of America. The films chosen will bring to light areas of inequality, discrimination and repression in history and in the present day based on the racial background of particular groups in our country. The course will include class discussions and reflective/argumentative papers to allow students to gain deeper insight into the systemic racism that was established in our country centuries ago and still influences society in the modern era.
